"Land...they ain't makin' it anymore..." — Will Rogers
Through a conservation easement with the Sagebrush Steppe Regional Land Trust, the 37 acre Robert Lehman Cedar Creek Preserve, protects and helped enhance habitat along a tributary of the Blackfoot River. Located in the Blackfoot River watershed, the conservation easement, donated by Peggy Stolworthy and her children, limits development and helped restore over a mile of Cedar Creek. The restoration project improved critical habitat for Yellowstone cutthroat trout and enhanced the riparian corridor for many other species. The surrounding uplands provide habitat for sage-grouse and winter range for elk, mule deer, and moose.ese sensitive areas.
On the 27th of June, 25 community members visited the Cedar Creek Preserve for a fun filled day of weeding. The group including a local Boy Scout troop, members of the land trust, Peggy (the property owner), and individuals from the community. We spent the morning pulling different species of non native thistle, including Canada thistle and Musk thistle, which were very abundant along the stream bank. With the hard work from everyone we were able to cover a large portion of the stream bank and decrease the amount of thistle that would had flowered and spread additional seed.
After our morning of hard work we were rewarded by Peggy with a great assortment of donuts, conversation, and butterfly catching. It was fun to see so many people willing to spend a Saturday morning for a great restoration cause!
